Computer Programs

Free download of Finale Notepad This is the notation software we use at the school. “Finale” is the program real composers
use to publish their own music. You can download “Note Pad” for free. This program allows you to enter music notes, and then
listen to your composition! Fun for everyone, but kids will probably require some help from adults at first.

Click on #7 “Learning and Practicing Tools.”
Harmonic Vision This Company has a program called “Music Ace.”

Acid Xpress is a free program that uses “loops” to create compositions. It is not un-like “Garage Band.”

Ways parents can enhance Childs musical experiences

Talk to your kids about music

Listen to different radio stations in the car.  Ask them what instruments they hear, if they like it or dislike it, what they imaging the music is about.

Allow your child to build a music collection

Start a CD or record collection.  You can always find an old turntable at a yard sale (or in your basement or attic).  Records are affordable for kids to buy at yard sales.  NHPR always hosts a record sale at Concord's Old Fashioned Bargain Days during the summer.  For the cost of one CD a child can choose 1-20 different records.  Your child can choose records from the pop sections, folk, country, classical, jazz, children's or even the comedy section!

See live music or go to the theater with your child

Seacoast Repertory Theater

The Leddy Center in Epping

Make up songs

They don't have to rhyme or be perfectly in tune.  Just start singing about anything
(walking the dog, for example) and see if your child sings along!

Sing

Sing at bedtime
Sing in the car on long and short trips
Sing while doing chores
Sing for the sake of singing!

Music Lessons

Nottingham School offers music lessons (excluding piano, guitar and violin) to beginner fourth through eighth
grade students.  These lessons are only once a week and sometimes shared with other students.
The summer is a terrific time for students to improve significantly on an instrument.  There are also
many kindergarten through third graders that are very interested in playing an instrument right now.
Piano and violin lessons are appropriate for children of this age group.   A recorder is also a good
instrument for younger children.  Click HERE for information about music teachers in the area.
